FAQs

Microsoft provides powerful tools and services for Azure Local that enable our appliances to function as on-premises cloud platforms. All appliances are certified by Microsoft for Azure Local and are therefore optimized to work seamlessly with the relevant Microsoft technologies.
Depending on the scenario, these include Solution Builder Extensions for lifecycle management, Storage Spaces Direct for software-defined storage, Azure Virtual Desktop for virtual desktops, Microsoft 365 Local for on-premises productivity services, and Azure Local Disconnected Operations for disconnected or highly sovereign environments.
The combination of certified Pyramid Compute Appliances and Microsoft’s Azure Local ecosystem boosts your productivity and creates a reliable foundation for on-premises cloud, virtualization, and storage workloads.

Microsoft’s Solution Builder Extension ensures the stable and error-free integration of firmware, driver, monitoring, and diagnostic updates throughout the entire Azure Local lifecycle. Our Azure Local Certified Appliances support centralized updates via SBE. This simplifies administration, increases operational reliability, and improves supportability. The SBE update process supports the efficient operation of on-premises Azure cloud infrastructures, particularly when there is more than one cluster or when appliances are distributed across multiple locations.

Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop provides virtual Windows desktops and applications. As a user, you access your work environment through your device, while the desktop and applications are provisioned centrally as virtual machines. When combined with Azure Local, session hosts can be run locally on Pyramid Compute Appliances. This is particularly useful when virtual workstations need to run close to local data sources, applications, or locations.

Pyramid is a Microsoft technology for software-defined storage. S2D pools the local drives of multiple servers into a shared, highly available storage pool for Azure Local. When combined with Compute Appliances, this creates a high-performance storage foundation for virtual machines, applications, and on-premises cloud workloads. Unlike traditional SAN architectures, S2D relies on SSD and NVMe resources built directly into the appliances, which are consolidated via software and, depending on the configuration, protected against failures. This results in a compact, high-performance hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) platform.

Azure Local Disconnected Operations enables the operation of sovereign private cloud and edge environments without a permanent connection to the Azure public cloud. To this end, Microsoft provides local management capabilities that allow selected resources to be operated under your control directly within your own on-premises infrastructure. When combined with Pyramid Compute Appliances, this creates on-premises cloud infrastructures for scenarios with particularly high requirements for data sovereignty, security, and availability. This is especially relevant for government agencies, KRITIS organizations, the defense sector, healthcare, industry, or locations with particularly stringent compliance requirements.

Microsoft 365 Local enables the operation of selected Microsoft productivity services on on-premises Azure infrastructure. These include, for example, Exchange Server and SharePoint Server for communication, collaboration, and document management. The solution is designed for organizations that want to run Microsoft productivity services in a private cloud environment. It supports digital sovereignty in general and, as a result, meets high standards for data storage, access control, and compliance. Microsoft 365 Local combines familiar Microsoft services with greater control over infrastructure and data. Depending on requirements, this enables organizations to effectively implement hybrid or highly isolated productivity environments.
