The Accessibility Reinforcement Act BFSG) requires operators of self-service terminals to ensure the accessibility of their devices for people with physical or sensory impairments.
The focus here is primarily on blind and visually impaired people, people with physical disabilities such as wheelchair users and deaf or hard of hearing users.
At least one alternative operating option must be available for each of these groups.
In concrete terms, this means: an operating mode that does not require vision, an operating mode that does not require full mobility and an operating mode that does not require hearing.
These requirements relate to both the physical design of the terminals and the design of the user interface.
The aim is to design self-service solutions in such a way that no one is excluded. Violations of the legal requirements can be punished with fines.
The law will be binding for new terminals from June 28, 2025, and devices that are already in use will be protected for 15 years.
Here, the legislator recommends voluntary retrofitting against the background of demographic developments. accessibility can benefit older consumers and thus be a competitive advantage for companies.
